Chicopee Officer Mark Wilkes called 911 on March 13 after complaining he wasn't feeling well. He'd competed in the annual Battle of the Badges between the Chicopee police and fire departments earlier that day but didn't feel right after returning home.

Wilkes suffered a "serious medical event" in the ambulance, and paramedics had to perform CPR as they rushed him to the hospital, where Wilkes would remain for "175 long days." Officials later said he had suffered a heart attack.

Chicopee police happily announced on Saturday, Sept. 3, that Wilkes had returned home.

Police, firefighters, and paramedics gave him an escort on the drive from the hospital.

The Chicopee mayor's office — along with dozens of others — posted their excitement to see Wilkes return home.

"Welcome back, Officer Wilkes!" the post read. "We're elated to see you on the path to recovery. Wishing you a rapid healing journey, knowing you'll emerge even stronger than before."

A fundraiser to help pay for Wilkes' hospital stay has raised more than $20,000. Donations are still being accepted at the Chicopee Police Department at 110 Church St. People can also leave contributions for Wilkes at the Polish National Credit Union under his name.

Rumblestreeet Bar & Grill will hold a golf tournament fundraiser for Mark Wilke's set for Oct. 21 at the Chicopee Country Club. Owner Billy Stetson said organizers are looking for hole sponsors.

People can also purchase a Chicopee police and Rumblestreet umbrella for $20 at the 482 Springfield Street bar. All proceeds go to Wilkes and his family.

Visit the restaurant's Facebook page for more information on the tournament or how to contribute.
